Headmaster Scott Wilson '75

B.A. University of Georgia
M.Ed. University of South Carolina
2006 Klingenstein Fellow, Columbia University Teacher’s College

more than four decades ago, scott wilson’s father set out on a mission to convince his eleven-year-old son to attend baylor school. of course, he had no way of knowing that his persistent nudging would plant the seed for a career in academia that would ultimately bring scott back to baylor as the school’s ninth headmaster.

“dad began persuading me that i should attend baylor school. i knew of baylor and had even attended day camp a couple of times, but i had not seriously considered going to school here,” says scott. “during the fall of 1968, dad and i traveled together virtually every weekend. i was indulged in professional football games, camping trips, and other excursions. the pattern was the same for each trip. we would have a great time and then he would launch into his lecture about why i should attend baylor. he would make the point that baylor grads were articulate, poised and confident. sending my brother (david ’84) and me to baylor was one of his proudest life accomplishments.”

after graduating from university of georgia with a ba in history in 1980, and serving the university as an admissions counselor, scott returned to baylor in 1981 to teach, coach, and assist jimmy duke in the baylor admissions office. in 1987, he succeeded his mentor as director of admission and financial aid. living on campus, scott embraced additional roles as dorm advisor in lupton and hunter halls. “i loved the breadth of the work and working with so many great people. there is a special synergy created when everyone works for the greater good of the school and its students. it was a magical time.”

scott is unwavering in his gratitude for his baylor experience and is eager to share many of the same core values he knew as a student to a new generation of young men and women. “returning to baylor is a great honor. baylor changed my life, and as an adult i have been grateful every day for the positive influence of my teachers and peers.” scott and his wife, susan, are the proud parents of jane ’17 and georgia ’14, a student at the university of georgia. his daughter sarah resides in atlanta; and his son, ben, lives in south florida with his family.
